about

Venus International 'Pléyades'

‘Endless Summer Symphony – Soak Up The Sun’ is a majestic opener to this bargain priced album of orchestraly tripped out summer beats, showcasing the talents of a host of international chanteuses and featuring (takes a deep breath): Christine Lunaire (USA) Crystin (Germany) Duygu Cingar (Turkey) Hanna (Germany) Iris Aneas (Spain) Jacqueline Bieze (Netherlands) Janea (Germany) Karo (Germany) LaMeduza (Switzerland) Ludmilla (Poland) Niki Carrera (Italy)Tonje Terese (Denmark))Yanina Bilyk (Ukraine) and Lalah (USA), all of whom are directed by the mastermind, polymath, playboy and musical genius that is the enigmatic Mr Alfa. ‘Pleyades’ is not only a worthy successor to Venus International’s previous self-titled debut outing, which in many respects it not only equals, but also frequently surpasses.

‘Soak Up The Sun’ is a Goldfrapp inspired slice of electro sonic bliss, while ‘My Body Shines’ is campfire acoustics’ and Bjork flavoured skittering electronica. ‘Into Something New’ is Shibuya Kei nodding sunshine pop, via Saint Etienne, and ‘Pleyades’ itself is a wave crashing ambient pop thrill of the highest order, all bubbling synth and slowly building textures evolving like a Parisian sunset as a distant accordion creates an hypnotic lullaby like Air covering Philip Glass.

‘Catching The Stars’ is like a more up-tempo Tindersticks, while ‘Endless Summer Symphony – Crystal Glares’ is a John Barry inspired spoken word mariachi mash-up of accordions, skiffle beats and lo fi beat box. ‘Beautiful’ is a Yazoo like take on melancholy, that effortlessly morphs into ‘Midsommar’s tripped out electro pulsing dub.

‘Summer Of Love’ is both edgy and laidback electroclash for after the party’s over and we’re waiting for the inevitable comedown, which is made final with the self explanatory ‘Endless Summer Symphony – End Titles’.

‘Pleyades’ is yet another great Venus International album.
